Rare 17th Century English Antique Carved Oak Portrait Panel Depicting King Charles I, Dated 1632

Rare 17th Century English Antique Carved Oak Portrait Panel Depicting King Charles I, Dated 1632.

A rare 17thC English antique carved oak portrait panel.

Depicting a side profile head-and-shoulders portrait of King Charles I (B. 1600 – D. 1649) of England, Scotland, Ireland and France (Monarch from 1625 until his execution at the hands of Oliver Cromwell in 1649). His profile is surrounded with the symbols of a rose, representing England; a thistle for Scotland; the fleur-de-leys for France; and Shamrock for Ireland.

Bearing the abbreviated latin inscription “Carolus DG – MAG – BRI – FRA – ET – HI – Rex” – meaning “Charles by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland”.

The portrait is flanked by geometric corner spandrels to the top and two elongated columns of flowers and foliage.

The panel bears a date of 1632 at its base – this may bear reference to the appointment of Sir Anthony Van Dyke as “Principal Painter to the King”, whose style of portraits commenced in that year, heralding a new decade of brilliant, transformative image-making of Charles I and his court.

Condition – as per images. There is a very minor loss to the corner spandrel, top left. The moulded frame appears to be of a later date. The panel has great colour and patination. This carving is of a large size. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
