Rare 15th Century English Antique Carved Oak Misericord

A rare 15th Century English antique carved oak misericord. Misericords of this period are extremely difficult to find.

A misericord is a small wooden structure formed on the underside of a folding seat in a church which, when the seat is folded up, is intended to act as a shelf to support a person in a partially standing position during long periods of prayer.

This example is carved in relief with stylised foliage flanked by carved branches terminating with trefoil-shaped leaves.

Lovely colour and age-related patination to the front.

Condition: As per the images. The back has been cleaned back at some point and the top too. This isn’t detrimental to the carving which displays very well.  A further condition report is available upon request.

Size: Height 19.5 cm x Width 54 cm x Depth 14 cm (7 3/4″ x 21 1/4″ x 5 1/2″)
