Pair of 17th Century Welsh Antique Oak Back Stools or Hall Chairs
A fine pair of 17thC Welsh antique oak hall chairs or back stools sourced from a private Suffolk-based collection.
Peg-joined construction.
Each chair has a shaped cresting rail with decorative cock-beading and a single central splat. The beading continues to the rear upright supports.
The original rebated planked seat boards remain and are supported by two turned front legs which are united by a turned stretcher. The back legs are of plain form and are united to the front legs by way of twin stretchers (plain in form) to each side and a single stretcher, again of plain form, to the back.
Condition – good overall as per the images. Good colour. There are some surface marks and wear commensurate with age. The seat boards have age-related splits and have been supported and strengthened by way of a single supporting baton to the underside of each seat. All joints are sound.
