A charming but naive 18th Century Dutch School antique family group portrait portrayed within a room setting with father, mother, son and baby. Also featuring their dog!
The sitters and artist are unknown.
To the left, light floods into the room through a leaded window illuminating a table with a blue and white delft jug, glass, pewter bottle, food bowl and ball of wool; her knitting draped over the back of a chair. A lantern hangs from the centre of the ceiling and three plates are supported by a rack on the wall to the upper left with a stove below. To the bottom left, a tricorn hat rests partly upon the worn and cracked tiled floor with an overturned basket and delft plate.
The father and mother look in adoration at their children whilst the pet dog looks towards the window. The baby appears to be holding a bible whilst the little boy points.
The mother’s apron appears to have seen better days as a tear has been painted on to the fabric. The artist has shown attention to detail as they have gone to the trouble of painting in the stitches at either end of the tear.
All-in-all, this is a wonderful genre painting of the period.
Presented in an associated antique gilt-gesso frame.
Condition – Offered for sale as found. Clean and re-lined prior to our ownership. Some surface craquelure is apparent and thinning of the paint is evident under very close scrutiny but is stable and this does not detract from the painting which displays very well. The frame has very minor losses to the gesso but again is good overall. Please refer to the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
Size: With the frame: Width 54 cm x Height 63 cm (21 1/4″ x 24 3/4″) / Without frame: Width 35 cm x Height 43 cm (13 3/4″ x 17″)
