Mid-18th Century English Antique Seal Bottle, Bearing The Seal of The Edgcumbe Family
A rare hand-blown seal bottle of cylinder form in green glass, bearing the seal for the Edgcumbe family and the 1st Baron Edgcumbe with a coronet with a wild boar below standing over a torse.
The bottle is remarkably intact with a complete string rim, elongated neck, broad collar and elongated cylinder-shaped body with an applied seal and raised pontil to the underside of the base.
This bottle displays incredibly well.
Earl of Mount EdgcumbeΒ is a title in theΒ Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1789 forΒ George Edgcumbe, 3rd Baron Edgcumbe. This branch of the Edgcumbe family descends from Sir Piers Edgcumbe ofΒ CoteheleΒ in Cornwall (descended from the younger son of Richard Edgcumbe (fl.Β 1324) of Edgcumbe in the parish ofΒ Milton AbbotΒ in Devon), who acquired an estate nearΒ PlymouthΒ through marriage in the early 16th century, which was later re-named “Mount Edgcumbe” (a common tradition shared by several estates, particularly on the south coast of Devon, for example, Mount Tavy, Mount Radford,Β Mount Boone, Mount Gold (Plymouth), Mount Wise, etc.). His descendantΒ Richard EdgcumbeΒ was a prominent politician and served as Paymaster-General of Ireland and asΒ Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. In 1742, he was createdΒ Baron Edgcumbe, of Mount Edgcumbe in theΒ County of Devon, in theΒ Peerage of Great Britain. Richard Edgcumbe was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Baron. He representedΒ Plympton Erle,Β LostwithielΒ andΒ PenrhynΒ in theΒ House of CommonsΒ and served asΒ Lord-Lieutenant of Cornwall. On his death, the title passed to his younger brother, the third Baron. He was anΒ Admiral of the BlueΒ and also held political office asΒ Treasurer of the HouseholdΒ and asΒ Captain of the Honourable Band of Gentlemen Pensioners. In 1781, he was createdΒ Viscount Mount Edgcumbe and Valletort and in 1789 he was further honoured when he was madeΒ Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. Both titles are in the Peerage of Great Britain.
