Mid 18th Century English Antique Brass Bleeding Bowl or Barbers Bowl & Brass and Steel Bloodletting Fleam

An 18th Century antique brass bleeding bowl, offered for sale with an associated four-bladed steel-and-brass blood letting fleam.

Often referred to as a “barbers bowl”, given the smaller characteristics of the basin, it is highly likely that this was used as a bleeding bowl rather than for shaving. Barber-Surgeons used these bowls for both purposes.

Made of a single sheet of brass with a central hammered basin.

Although polished at the front, the back retains it original patination built up over the centuries!

The fleam comprises four steel blades sheathed with a brass handle. Each blade bears the inscription “Bath” with the symbols of a star and crescent.

Condition – Bowl – the  original hanger is missing hence the small punched hole where this was once fixed. A small fatigued area of brass is noted approx 2cm (3/4″) long This bowl is in excess of 250 years old and still displays very well.

Fleam – In very good order as per the images.
