A mid 18th Century, Continental antique, carved wooden sculpture depicting a memento mori. Applied with gesso, polychrome and gilding.
Memento mori is a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’. A basic memento mori sculpture or painting would be a portrait with a skull but other symbols commonly found are hour glasses or clocks, extinguished or guttering candles, fruit, and flowers.
This example depicts a skull and crossbones over a foliate base.
Condition – Good as per the images. Some surface wear commensurate with age. One piece of the foliate base is missing verso.
