A mid 17th Century German antique iron, Nuremberg-made, “Armada Chest”/ strongbox. In original condition with decorative strap work and carry handles at each end.
The external surfaces are painted with polychrome decoration.
The front is applied with a faux escutcheon, the top, with a central keyhole, is turned by its original key. The lid opens to reveal a complicated locking mechanism.
The internal box retains its original till and the interior (excluding the underside of the lid and locking mechanism) is painted in its original red oxide paint.
Condition – There is age related wear to the surface of the box. Please refer to the images for further reference. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
