Late 17th English Antique Oak Candlestand with Barley Twist Stem, Circa 1680

They don’t come much better than this!

From the contents of Longley Old Hall, a Grade II listed Hall, situated in Yorkshire, England.

A late 17th Century English antique oak candlestand in completely original condition. With a turned circular plank top with raised rim over a turned barley-twist stem supported on a raised tripod base.

Lovely colour and patination.

ConditionΒ – some surface wear and marks, specifically to the top as one would expect from age and use. It is as good as it looks and oozes all the charm and character of the period which it relates.

Provenance: Ex-Longley Old Hall

The candlestand formed part of the contents and stood, until this year, in the hall.

Longley old hall has its origins in the 13th Century and was the family seat of the Ramsden Family who owned the Manors of Almondbury and Huddersfield from 1590.Β  In the earlier 20th Century the family found an opportunity to rid the family of its turbulent tenantry, selling both these Manors and their estate of some 4,300 acres, to the Huddersfield Corporation in 1920 for the sum of Β£1.3M, making Huddersfield β€œthe town that bought itself”. The only properties excluded from the sale were Longley Old Hall, “because it was the foundation of the family wealth” and an adjoining cottage. In 1977 Sir Geoffrey Pennington Ramsden, the seventh baronet, sold these properties and broke the last connection between the family and the town.
Simon Jenkins, Former Chairman of The National Trust included Longley Old Hall in his book England’s 1000 Best Houses where he called it an β€œarchitectural goldmine”. During the 19th Century, the Hall became the Dower House for the Ramsden family when they built a New Hall further down the hill. This meant that the Old Hall was generally “maintained” rather than re-modelled. The last major re-modelling of the Hall took place in 1870 with the installation of a grand galleried oak staircase.
