Large Mid 18th Century Italian Antique Blue and White Faience Tile / Plaque Depicting Saint Bruno

Large Mid 18th Century Italian Antique Blue and White Faience Tile / Plaque Depicting Saint Bruno

A large mid-18th Century faience plaque depicting Saint Bruno kneeling at prayer with Memento Mori and Corpus Christi, as a clergyman looks on.

Bearing the name at its base “S. Brunono”.

Bruno of Cologne, O.Cart., venerated as Saint Bruno, was the founder of the Carthusian Order in 1084. He personally founded the order’s first two communities. He was a celebrated teacher at Reims, and a close advisor of his former pupil, Pope Urban II. His feast day is October 6.

Made from earthenware covered in tin glaze and decorated in underglaze blue. The plaque bears the signature of the artist verso however this is incredibly difficult to read.

Condition –  The rim has some very minor fritting at its base. Aside from this, this plaque is in good condition. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
