A large and very realistic antique carved wooden memento-mori in the form of a skull with significant levels of gesso and original polychrome.
Mid-17th Century in date and of Continental origin.
Memento-mori (Latin for “remember that you have to die) is an artistic or symbolic trope acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death.
Carved from a single piece of timber, the carver clearly had an understanding of anatomy given the detail seen in this piece.
Provenance – Sourced from a private collection in Portugal.
Condition – Please refer to the images. Some surface wear is commensurate with age. The inner rim of the jar where the lid fits has a minor loss. This cannot be seen when the lid is placed upon it and the fit remains snug. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
