A historic bronze mortar which we couldn’t resist!
English/Scottish in origin and dating back to the 13th Century!
With four split column pilasters between four lugs, two of “D” section, the other two with rings.
Provenance – Ex-Christopher Bangs Collection. A renowned expert and collector and dealer of early metalware, Christopher passed away in May 2021. He vetted the BADA and Olympia fairs and the now defunct Grosvenor House Fair. He also exhibited at the London fairs in the 1980s and early 90s and was also known for submitting the objects he both collected and sold to scientific testing to check on their construction, originality and authenticity. He wrote a number of papers and other publications too including the reference book: “The Lear Collection – A Study of Copper Alloy Candlesticks AD200 to AD1700”.
Condition – Good as per the images. There is a very minor hairline crack running approx an 2.5cm (1″) in length from the rim of the mortar but this is historic and stable. Please refer to the images. This does not detract from the mortar and it must be remembered that this is an incredibly rare survivor from the 13th Century. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
