A charming late 19th Century portrait miniature.
Watercolour on wafer.
The image is after the original oil-on-wood painting entitled “Madonna del Cardellino” or “Madonna of the Goldfinch” by the renowned Italian Renaissance artist Raphael, from c. 1505–1506. A 10-year restoration process was completed on the original full length painting in 2008 (an image of the original painting can be seen on this page), after which the painting was returned to its home at the Uffizi in Florence. During the restoration, an antique copy replaced the painting in the gallery.
This miniature bears a feint illegible signature to the bottom right. It has however been undertaken by a very accomplished hand.
Presented behind glass in a faux ivory frame.
Condition – Please refer to the images. There is very minor surface wear to the Madonna’s hairline however this is stable and does not detract from the portrait which still displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
