Follower of Hogarth (1697-1764) –Β  An 18th Century English School Antique Oil on Canvas Portrait of an Aristocratic Gentleman

An 18th Century English School antique oil on canvas head and shoulders portrait of an aristocratic young man.

Depicted wearing a wig, white stock and brown jacket.

The sitter is unknown.

The portrait is unsigned and the artist is unknown but has been undertaken by a very accomplished hand and appears to have been influenced by William Hogarth and we deem this a “follower of”.

By β€œFollower of”, the definition means that we believe that the work was done in the manner of the named artist, during their lifetime or later.

William Hogarth (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, andΒ editorial cartoonist. His work ranges fromΒ realisticΒ portraiture toΒ comic strip-like series of pictures called “modern moral subjects”, and he is perhaps best known for his seriesΒ A Harlot’s Progress,Β A Rake’s ProgressΒ andΒ Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as “Hogarthian”.

Presented in a period gilt gesso frame, the corner spandrels are decorated with foliage and acorns.

Verso, the pine stretcher bears an old inscription but is illegible.

Condition – Please refer to the images. The portrait has historically been cleaned and re-lined. There is significant age-related craquelure to the paint surface and evidence of heavy filling and repainting, specifically along the top horizontal of the canvas where the portrait meets the frame.
