A late 17th antique carved oak sculpture of Orpheus with his lyre.
Orpheus is a legendary musician and prophet in ancient Greek religion. He was also a renowned poet and, according to the legend, travelled with Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece.
Provenance: Ex-Hurst collection.
Condition – surface wear commensurate with age. There are minor traces of residual gesso and polychrome. His right foot had become detached from his ankle. This has been re-attached historically.
