Description

We offer for sale this rare English medieval period antique carved stone grotesque.

Originally found in a Norfolk-based bottle pit and excavated some 40 years ago. It was subsequently placed in a North Norfolk garden since that time as an architectural curiosity until it was acquired by us earlier this year.

Depicting a grimacing face with wide-open eyes, hair and veil, the arms set in front with joined hands. Quite a menacing figure! This carving most probably adorned the external corner façade of a medieval church tower or another high-status building of the same period.

Condition – surface wear is commensurate with age (weathered). Please refer to the images.  This displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size: Height 44.5 cm x Width 25.5 cm x Depth 28 cm (17 1/2″ x 10″ x 11″)
