After Francesco Laurana (1430-1502), A Large 15th Century Style, Early 19th Century-Made, Life-Size Antique Bust of a Princess, Possibly Ippolita Maria Sforza

A life-size polychromed terracotta bust of a Lady, possibly Ippolita Maria Sforza.

Believed to originate from the early 19th Century and made for the Grand Tour.

This bust is derived from the marble original of about 1473 attributed to the sculptor Francesco Laurana (a Dalmation Sculptor who also worked between Croatia and Naples, Italy, during the early Renaissance Period.)

The original is in the collection of the Berlin Staatliche Museum but was badly damaged by fire during the Second World War. The original is well documented in a reference book entitled “La Scultura”.

The bust is believed to depict Ippolita Maria Sforza (1446- 1484) of the ruling family of the Duchy of Milan who married Alphonso of Aragon, eldest son of King Ferdinand I of Naples. Laurana was commissioned to produce a series of portrait busts of the Aragonese Royal ladies.

Condition – Good overall as per the images with no trace of any restoration. Some age-related surface wear and some polychrome losses but overall, she displays very well.  A further detailed report is available upon request.
