Description
A charming mid-16th Century French antique oak carved panel.
Depicting a female figure within an arcaded frieze and foliate and bud corner spandrels representing the story of Apollo and Daphne.
Apollo vowed to honour Daphne forever and used his powers of eternal youth and immortality to maintain the laurel “evergreen”. Apollo then made a laurel wreath out of the leaves and branches and turned Daphne into a cultural symbol for him and other musicians and poets which are two of the great virtues of renaissance art.
Condition – There has been some historic worm (treated and long since gone) and a very small patch has been replaced at the bottom where the timber has thinned with age. This panel does display very well.
Size: Height 37 cm (14.5″) x Width 24 cm (9.5″) x Depth 2.5 cm (1″)
