£775.00

16th Century Antique Carved Oak Portrait Panel Of A Saint, Formerly A Tabernacle Door

Description

Formerly a tabernacle door, this charming, yet naive, antique carved oak panel depicts a full-length portrait of a Saint with substantial amounts of original polychrome, wearing a blue cape, turban, and loincloth, his right hand held upwards, his left holding a staff capped with a cross. Surrounded by a carved border with lunettes.

The panel retains its original iron escutcheon and there is evidence of old hinges to the outer edge that have been removed a long time ago.

Condition – as per the images with an old dry surface. There is age-related surface wear and losses to the outer edges. The carving displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
