Unusual Late 18th Century Antique Iron "Rat Tail" Candlestick or Rat de Cave Candlestickon an Associated Iron Base

  • Reference : 5259
  • Availability : Available Now
  • Dimensions : Height 10 1/2" approx
  • Price : £295

Information

An usual late 18th Century antique "rat tail" candlestick with functioning rise-and-fall winder. Also known as a rat de cave or courting candlestick.

These candlesticks are usually made with wooden bases. This particular example (after much debate) appears to have been associated to a 19thC blacksmith-made base with drip pan, twisted stem and a raised circular foot. The stem has been peened to the base.

It was tradition for a woman to be courted in years gone by. A tallow candle would be placed in the stick and wound up/down to reveal the wick and a proportion of the candle by the females parent/guardian. Once the candle was lit and, when burnt down to the rim of the candlesconce, it was time to for the gentleman admirer to leave! Hence, the sticks also gaining the name "courting candlestick".

Condition - good as per the images. This would make a lovely addition to anyone's period lighting collection.
