Late 16th Century / Early 17th Century Malines Antique Alabaster Table Casket, Circa 1590-1620, with Secret Drawers

  • Reference : 4692
  • Availability : Available Now
  • Dimensions : Width 13" x Height 7 1/4" x Depth 8 1/4"
  • Price : £2950

A fine late 16thC / early 17thC Malines-made alabaster table casket.

Whilst England was a centre for the production of finely carved alabasters from the 14th to 16th Centuries and, enjoyed the export of these wears to Europe too, European centres in Germany around Lubeck and Nuremberg and those in the Netherlands around Brussels, Antwerp and Malines also produced finely carved examples including altarpieces and boxes too.

Cabinets like our fine example, are difficult to find.

With wooden carcass, this lovely cabinet is of architectural form. With applied alabasters to the top, front, sides, and back. It also has two sets of secret drawers.  Each end lifts to reveal drawers within. The lid lifts to reveal an interior with its original till.

This charming box has real presence and would grace any sideboard.

Condition - surface wear as per images.  Loss of carrying handle. Original hinges re-fixed internally. A small element of alabaster is missing from the "Tuscan"-type column to the far left (see images 2 and 12). The secret drawers have been re-painted historically. The original lock still functions.
