Mid 17th Century English Antique Oak Wainscot Chair with Box Seat, Circa 1650

  • Reference : 2929
  • Availability : Available Now
  • Dimensions : Please see main description for size
  • Price : £1950

A rare 17th Century English antique oak chair with box seat.

With twin-panelled back, the top capped with a decoratively carved cresting rail.

Shaped arms are over turned arm supports, the box seat with iron butterfly hinges and scratch-carved apron below and period iron lockplate leading to bobbin turned front legs united by stretchers (plain legs at rear).

Peg-joined construction.

This chair has great colour and presence!

Condition - original aside the following:

The carved cresting rail is a 17thC replacement.

The left arm has a spliced repair but has been done well.

The front of the seat board has been replaced historically - looking at the butterfly hinges, the back is original and the front in our opinion was replaced during the 19thC.

The baseboard to the box seat has been replaced.

Size 43" at back to tip or rear uprights;

Seat at front (outer arm to outer arm) 22" at front reducing to 21 1/4" at back;

Seat width (between arms is 17") - A 17 1/2" stone man can comfortably sit between the arms;

Seat height 16"; and

Seat depth 18" front the front to where it meets the back board.
