18th Century Primitive English Antique Comb Back Windsor Armchair, Circa 1780

  • Availability : Available Now
  • Dimensions : Back Height 42" x Max Width (outer arm to outer arm) 25" x Seat Depth 14 1/2" x Seat Height 16"
  • Price : £1595

Information

A primitive West-Country made English antique comb back windsor chair (ash and elm) based on a more refined design of the 1770's (see final image for the more refined chair where reference is made).

It is nice to think that during the late 18th Century, someone had seen a finer example of the chair with turned legs, stretcher, etc and must have approached an 18thC provincial craftsman or bodger to "make something similar".

Our chair clearly has a more "primitive approach" with shaped cresting rail; spindle back; three-part bow; shaped arm supports; thick two-part elm slab seat (with original pegs) and four roughly hewn and shaped legs secured to the seatboard with wedges.

Very good colour.

These chairs are hard to find.

A sturdy chair that is ready to go!

Condition - very historic loss to the left tip of the cresting rail and small loss to the hand rest of the left arm support - please refer to the images.
