A Rare "Matched Pair" of 18th Century English Antique Brass Lantern Candlesticks, Circa 1720-1740

  • Reference : 565/11 (a) and (b)
  • Availability : Available Now
  • Dimensions : Height = 4 1/4" (1" = 2.5cm) approx
  • Price : £450

A rare "matched pair" of English antique brass lantern candlesticks dating back to the early to mid part of the 18th Century.

These sticks were designed specifically for the lighting of porches and hallways of wealthier households in conjunction with much larger pendant lobby lanterns.

A lobby lantern was usually ornately engraved and made of brass or bronze.  The base of these was often flat and had no candle socket. Such lanterns would contain a short "lantern" candlestick as per the one we have for sale so that the actual lantern could hold a much longer than "normal" candle allowing for increased burn time.

Given that the lanterns in themselves were only afforded by the very wealthiest households, these lantern candlesticks are incredibly rare.

The sticks are in two parts; the tulip shaped sconce unscrews from the circular base.
