05/11/20 - An Important Update Regarding Coronavirus (Covid-19) & The Second National Lockdown from Thursday 5th November 2020

Holt Antique Furniture Ltd and its related Companies would like to update you on what's happening at our antiques store “Holt Antiques at Walsingham Mill” with the continued threat of Coronavirus (Covid-19) and the second National Lockdown.

Dear Customers...

As you are probably aware, the Coronavirus outbreak has caused unprecedented turmoil to the retail shop / High Street sector since 23rd March 2020 with all non-essential shops forced to close. The UK Government initially took the decision to allow this sector which, includes Antiques Stores, to re-open from 15th June 2020, but only if we were/are able to meet specified criteria outlined in the "COVID 19 HEALTH & SAFETY GUIDELINES" along with the rules set out by North Norfolk District Council.

We are now presented with a second National Lockdown for non-essential shops effective from 5th November 2020.

We must act responsibly during this challenging period, to ensure that the safety and wellbeing of both our staff and customers continues.

With the above in mind, we have had to make the difficult decision to keep our store at Walsingham CLOSED TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. The mill will not re-open until some time in 2021 when the virus risk has hopefully abated and we are able to meet any Covid-19 related rules and regulations set out by the relevant authorities at that time.

MUCH OF OUR STOCK IS AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE VIA OUR WEBSITE (WITH NEW STOCK ADDED WEEKLY) where we are committed to maintaining our outstanding level of service. Please see:

Ex Longley Old Hall - Late 17th English Antique Oak Candlestand with Barley Twist Stem, Circa 1680

Information

They don't come much better than this!

From the contents of Longley Old Hall, a Grade II listed Hall, situated in Yorkshire, England.

A late 17th Century English antique oak candlestand in completely original condition. With a turned circular plank top with raised rim over a turned barley-twist stem supported on a raised tripod base. Please note that the candlestick pictured is excluded from the sale.

Lovely colour and patination.

Condition - some surface wear and marks, specifically to the top as one would expect from age and use. It is as good as it looks and oozes all the charm and character of the period which it relates.

Provenance:

The candlestand formed part of the contents and stood, until this year, in the hall.

Longley old hall has its origins in the 13th Century and was the family seat of the Ramsden Family who owned the Manors of Almondbury and Huddersfield from 1590.  In the earlier 20th Century the family found an opportunity to rid the family of its turbulent tenantry, selling both these Manors and their estate of some 4,300 acres, to the Huddersfield Corporation in 1920 for the sum of £1.3M, making Huddersfield “the town that bought itself”. The only properties excluded from the sale were Longley Old Hall, "because it was the foundation of the family wealth" and an adjoining cottage. In 1977 Sir Geoffrey Pennington Ramsden, the seventh baronet, sold these properties and broke the last connection between the family and the town.
Simon Jenkins, Former Chairman of The National Trust included Longley Old Hall in his book England’s 1000 Best Houses where he called it an “architectural goldmine”. During the 19th Century, the Hall became the Dower House for the Ramsden family when they built a New Hall further down the hill. This meant that the Old Hall was generally "maintained" rather than re-modelled. The last major re-modelling of the Hall took place in 1870 with the installation of a grand galleried oak staircase.
