Barn Found 19th Century English Antique Agateware / Slipware Cradle Attributed to the Kitson Family of Halifax, England

  • Reference : 5347
  • Availability : Available Now
  • Dimensions : Length 11" x Max Height (hood) 8 1/2" x Width 7 1/4"
  • Price : £475

A 19th Century English antique earthenware agateware cradle decorated in slip.

Barn-found in North Norfolk and complete with dust too!

Arributed to the Kitson Family of potters, who potted at the Ainley Top and Woodman House potteries near Halifax, Yorkshire.

These ceramic cradles were often given as wedding presents to newly weds as a sign of good fortune and fertility.

These cradles were handmade using slabs of clay for the main cradle and rockers. The hood was wheel-thrown and then cut before adding it to the slab body. The body has applied wheel-thrown clay finials/knops on the hood, sides and front corners together with hand made and applied stylised, if not slightly naive, birds.

The outer back edge of the hood and cradle rim are incised with a deep straight notch pattern, the front edge of the hood is ‘scalloped’. The agateware body is a mixture of white clay and red clay, glazed with a yellowish iron-stained clear lead glaze. The underside is un-glazed.

Condition - this is in original untouched and unrestored condition and offered as it was found! There are a number of minor losses, specifically to one of the birds and knops - please refer to the images. The date of 1880 has also worn with glaze losses apparent.

This remains a charming item and would enhance anyone's collection of agateware or slipware originating from the Northern region of England.

We ship worldwide & buy with confidence too!
