04/08/20 - An Important Update Regarding Coronavirus (Covid-19) 4th August 2020

Holt Antique Furniture Ltd and its related Companies would like to update you on what's happening at our antiques store “Holt Antiques at Walsingham Mill” with the continued threat of Coronavirus (Covid-19).

Dear Customers...

As you are probably aware, the Coronavirus outbreak has caused unprecedented turmoil to the retail shop / High Street sector since 23rd March 2020 with all non-essential shops being forced to close. The UK Government took the decision to allow this sector which, includes Antiques Stores, to re-open from 15th June 2020, but only if we are able to meet specified criteria set out in the "COVID 19 HEALTH & SAFETY GUIDELINES".

We must act responsibly during this challenging period, to ensure that the safety and wellbeing of both our staff and customers continues.

With the above in mind, we have had to make the difficult decision to keep our store at Walsingham closed for the time being to the general public. This situation will again be reviewed at the end of August 2020.

MUCH OF OUR STOCK IS AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE VIA OUR WEBSITE (WITH NEW STOCK ADDED WEEKLY) where we are committed to maintaining our outstanding level of service. Please see:

The Management Team at Holt Antiques would like to thank every one of you for your continued support during this time.

Follower of Bronzino (1503-1572), Large & Impressive 16thC Style, 19thC Made, Italian School Antique Oil on Canvas Portrait of a Renaissance Period Lady

Information

A wonderful 19thC Italian School antique oil on canvas portrait of an unknown Italian Renaissance Period lady by a follower of 16thC Italian artist Agnolo di Cosimo, known as Bronzino, clearly influenced by such portraits as that of Lucrezia Panciatichi (circa 1545), the original hanging in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy.

Oil on canvas.

Presented in gilt gesso and ebonised carved wooden frame.

About Bronzino:

Agnolo di Cosimo (November 17, 1503 – November 23, 1572), usually known as Bronzino or Agnolo Bronzino, was an Italian Mannerist painter from Florence. His sobriquetBronzino, may refer to his relatively dark skin or reddish hair.

He lived all his life in Florence, and from his late 30s was kept busy as the court painter of Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. He was mainly a portraitist but also painted many religious subjects, and a few allegorical subjects, which include what is probably his best known work, Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time, c. 1544–45, now in London. Many portraits of the Medicis exist in several versions with varying degrees of participation by Bronzino himself, as Cosimo was a pioneer of the copied portrait sent as a diplomatic gift.

He trained with Pontormo, the leading Florentine painter of the first generation of Mannerism, and his style was greatly influenced by him, but his elegant and somewhat elongated figures always appear calm and somewhat reserved, lacking the agitation and emotion of those by his teacher. They have often been found cold and artificial, and his reputation suffered from the general critical disfavour attached to Mannerism in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Recent decades have been more appreciative of his art.

Condition - cleaned historically and res-trectched. There is a slight indent to the paint surface (see top right of the image) however she still displays incredibly well.
