Information

An identical punch bowl to this can be found on pages 90 & 91, Ref: no.31 of the book "The British Museum", English & Irish Delftware 1570-1840 by Aileen Dawson.

This fine and rare punch bowl was made in London and dates to circa 1775-1780. Decorated to the external surfaces in the fashionable "chinoiserie style" of the 18th Century in underglaze blue on a bluish-white ground. The internal surface of the bowl inscribed "Success to Trade" - a reference to the second half of the 18th Century and the fierce competition between England and France to secure trade to their colonies, especially in North America.

An identical bowl is in the collection of the British Museum and a second example which, has been attributed to Liverpool rather than London, can be seen in the collection of the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery.

Four further fragments of the same pattern/bowl have been excavated in the USA; two of these in Virginia; one in South Carolina and another in New Hampshire.

Condition - Good overall. A very minor trace of restoration (very well executed) can be detected under close scrutiny to the Chinoiserie decoration on the garden scene between the two buildings and part of the blue swag to the rim (see images 14 & 15).  Please refer to the images. This bowl displays very well.
