Information

A wonderful English antique pollarded oak veneered table cabinet made from the legendary Fairlop Oak which was reputed to be a 1000 years old when it fell in 1820.

The Fairlop Oak stood in Hainault Forest (Fairlop is a district in the London Borough of Redbridge, in east London) when much of the area was covered in trees. The oak is said to have had a trunk sixty-six feet in circumference, from which seventeen branches issued, most of them measuring not less than twelve feet in girth. In the eighteenth century, a pump and block maker from Wapping, Daniel Day, would take his employees on an annual fair in the forest, using the oak as their rendezvous. The fair took place on the first Friday of July.

The tree was blown down in a storm in 1820.

The oak was sold the same year and from this, this cabinet and another were formed.  We have snipets of newspaper articles from 1820 about the timber being sold and further articles published in 1851 and 1906.  These articles will be included in the sale.

This fine cabinet is in original untouched condition and is offered for sale "as found".

Comprising an inlaid top, two doors to the front - these open to reveal an interior with an arrangement of 6 drawers with original handles, the exterior sides feature their original ormolu carry-handles. The cabinet is supported on its original bun feet.

Condition - excellent patination.  There is a very slight warp to the cabinet doors but this is unobtrusive. The veneers have some age related shrinkage but are stable to the front, top and side exterior surfaces. The back board veneer has raises slightly in two places due to previous heat exposure and there is a minor loss to the top right corner verso but this cannot be seen from the front.  This cabinet displays very well.
