Information

This fine early 17th Century English antique child's coffer was originally illustrated in "Country Life" magazine, page 111, 20/10/1988.

Restored by the BADA (British Antique Dealers' Association) College of Restoration, West Dean College, Near Chichester, West Sussex, England in the 1980's, it was considered to be a very rare survivor of the early 17th Century given it was formed from pine boards rather than oak.

Constructed from deal (pine as stated), the plank top with moulded front front and chip carved sides, retains its original hinges; the front decorated with chip carving and retaining its original lock plate, hasp and lock. Supported on raised stile feet.  The internal till (candlebox) remains.

Provenance: Sold 1st November 1988 for £1035 to Miss M J Davis, Tamworth by Horn Antiques, Surrey; thereafter dispersed via public auction of Miss MJ Davis' estate sale 22nd June 2012; thereafter held in a private collection in London until acquired by us in January 2018.

Condition - as per images. Traces of old worm (treated and long since gone).
