16thC English antique oak carvings are always difficult to source with many destroyed during the Reformation of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1541.
These three lovely grotesques, reputed to have come from an Abbey in Yorkshire have been sourced from a private collection and once formed part of the decorative adornments to an early 16th Century choir stall now long since lost.
Of graduated size, each head depicts an individual character with one even winking!
Condition as per images. Attached to an oak backboard made from a period piece of timber, these heads display very well.
