Information

Chinnery's book "Oak Furniture the British Tradition", Figure 3:368 (page 360) states that it is unusual to find a chest with a single large panel to the front.  Our example has just that and may well have come from the same workshop or indeed have been made by the same hand as the documented example.

Peg-joined construction.

With single panelled top (unusually carved with nulling to one end) over a lunnette carved apron.  The single panelled front carved with elongated stylised acanthus leaves. The bottom rail carved with classical-type curves.  The support stiles are also chip-carved with geometric decoration. This decoration is also repeated to both sides.

The chest has the most wonderful aged blacksmith repair to the rear right stile (see images) and a naive repair to the right side panel at its base where a historic timber repair has simply been nailed to the original carcass!

Original hinges.  Original base boards too.

Condition - as per images.

This is a lovely looking chest of rare form.
