Information

A charming 18th Century American Antique "sack back" windsor armchair in original paint.

During the early 1760’s Philadelphia chair makers’, responding to new design influences from England, introduced a sack-back armchair to the market. The construction enclosed the spindle tops within a steamed and bent bow above the arm rail.

The coastal trade in furniture and the migration of craftsmen brought the design to New York City, which along with Newport, Rhode Island, comprised the non-European centres of Windsor chair making before the War of Independence. The sack-back design remained current into the 1780's.

How this chair arrived in the UK, we will never know!

Needless to say, it is a lovely looking and sturdy chair which is ready to go.

Condition - Paint losses commensurate with age but all in all good as per images.
