04/10/20 - An Important Update Regarding Coronavirus (Covid-19) 4th October 2020

Holt Antique Furniture Ltd and its related Companies would like to update you on what's happening at our antiques store “Holt Antiques at Walsingham Mill” with the continued threat of Coronavirus (Covid-19).

Dear Customers...

As you are probably aware, the Coronavirus outbreak has caused unprecedented turmoil to the retail shop / High Street sector since 23rd March 2020 with all non-essential shops being forced to close. The UK Government took the decision to allow this sector which, includes Antiques Stores, to re-open from 15th June 2020, but only if we are able to meet specified criteria set out in the "COVID 19 HEALTH & SAFETY GUIDELINES".
We must act responsibly during this challenging period, to ensure that the safety and wellbeing of both our staff and customers continues.

With the above in mind, we have had to make the difficult decision to keep our store at Walsingham closed for the time being to the general public until further notice

MUCH OF OUR STOCK IS AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE VIA OUR WEBSITE (WITH NEW STOCK ADDED WEEKLY) where we are committed to maintaining our outstanding level of service. Please see:

The Management Team at Holt Antiques would like to thank every one of you for your continued support during this time.

Petite 18th Century English Antique Oak Spice Cupboard with Bold Dentil Cornice, Circa 1770

  • Reference : 3095
  • Availability : Available Now
  • Dimensions : Height 13 1/2" x Max Width 11 1/2" x Depth 6 3/4"
  • Price : £995

A lovely English antique oak and pine spice cupboard.

George III period, circa 1770 or earlier.

This small cupboard has a number of desirable and unusual features:

- Bold dentil cornice with unusual diagonal slanted "teeth".

- Double reeded moulding around the edge of the door. This is a typically late 17th or early 18th century feature.

- Nice early form butterfly type brass hinges

- Small, neat dimensions. Good proportions with a bold cornice.

This is very much a country piece and is constructed out of oak and pine. One side board is of stained pine, the other is of oak. The base board is stained pine.

The interior is stained pine and the drawers are of crude construction. The black stain appears to be of a later date.

The butterfly hinges and the double reeded moulding would have been distinctly old-fashioned by 1770, but the cornice has a mid 18th century feel to it and I have dated it conservatively to 1770 on the basis that it is a provincial piece.

As per photographs, but please note in particular:

Replaced modern lock (no key);

Loss to left hand corner of cornice;

Possible old repair to door; and

Old marks and scratches commensurate with age.
