A late 18th Century English antique elm dough bin for sale.

Whilst these now make ideal sideboards in the modern home, giving that "country look", their original purpose was used for making bread!

When making bread, flour had to be warmed in winter if it had come in from a cold barn or cellar, and a dough box was a good place for that. Once the yeast was added the mixture it had to stay quite warm for the dough to rise. Bins like this were ideal for forming loaves as the trough-shape prevented the spilling of flour.

The bin was often placed in a warm room near the fire or range. The lid was good for keeping in the warmth, and it protected the dough from mice, ash, or other horrors: especially useful if the dough was left to rise a long time. Overnight was not unusual. Slow rising generally improved flavour and texture, and did not require temperatures near to blood heat.

The lid offered a surface for shaping the risen dough into loaves and then leaving them to rise again after being handled. Some lids had tray sides to make carrying the bread to the oven simpler. . A lidded box could be used for storing bread.

Original throughout, nailed construction, with a plank top above a plank carcass supported on raised legs of rectangular form united by an H-Stretcher.

Condition - as per images.  Good colour. Historic traces of worm (long since gone and treated as a precautionary measure).
