A fine pair of late 17th / early 18th Century fire dogs.  Also known as spit dogs or andirons. "Andirons" is derived from the old French word "andier" but is a little confusing as it does not relate to iron!

These dogs were used for supporting logs in an open fireplace and were also designed to support a spit at the front which would be used to cook various joints of meat in front of the open fire.

English or Scottish origin.

Sourced from a private owner who is a direct descendant of James Stuart, 4th Earl of Moray (c. 1611 – 4 March 1653), but now resides in East Anglia, United Kingdom.  These dogs have been in the same family since the early 19th Century until being acquired by us.

Condition - very good as per images
